Anna Dempsey is a Florida-born educator & writer

She won the inaugural Hilary Mantel Prize for fiction, judged by Maggie O'Farrell. She was also a finalist for the 2025 AWP James Alan McPherson Novel Award, long-listed for the Womens Prize Discoveries programme and runner-up for the 2024 Bridport Novel Prize. In 2019 she won the Costa Short Story Award.
Her writing has appeared in Sonora Review, Popshot, Dear Damsels, and other lit magazines. 
She is a graduate of Goldsmiths, University of London’s Children’s Lit and Creative Writing MA Program. Currently, she’s working towards her PhD in Creative Writing/Creative Grieving at Bath Spa University and the University of Bristol, with funding from the SWWDTP.
Anna runs The Grove, a creative writing community in SE London offering in-person courses and several book clubs for children at her local library. She also tutors young people.
