Anna Dempsey is a Florida-born educator & writer

She won the inaugural Hilary Mantel Prize for fiction, judged by Maggie O'Farrell. She was also a finalist for the 2025 AWP James Alan McPherson Novel Award, long-listed for the Womens Prize Discoveries programme and runner-up for the 2024 Bridport Novel Prize. In 2019 she won the Costa Short Story Award.
Her writing has appeared in Sonora Review, Popshot, Dear Damsels, and Reading Children's Fairytales: Inside the Gingerbread House.
She holds a PhD in Creative Writing/Creative Grieving from Bath Spa University and the University of Bristol, which was funded by the SWWDTP.
Anna runs The Grove, a creative writing community in SE London offering in-person courses and a Dead Dad Walking Club. She also tutors young people.
